How to activate NHIF status

If your last contribution is more than a year, you will be required to pay Ksh 1500  to activate your account, this being 3 months contribution.

Please note you will not be able to access hospital services till 60 days are over from the time you make the payment. This is the penalty levied for having defaulted for a year or more.

If you have not paid your contribution for less than a year, you will have to pay the contributions and the penalties for the months defaulted to activate your account. The monthly contribution for self-employed persons is Ksh 500 and the penalty is Ksh 250 for every month defaulted.

So for example, if you have defaulted for 5 months, below is the amount you ought to pay:

Contribution: 5 x 500 = 2500

penalty: 5 x 250=750

Total payment:2500 +750= 3250

The advantage of this, is there is no waiting period. Your account will be active once the contribution and the penalties are paid. You will also be able to access hospital services immediately.

A point to note, is that you can’t opt for one or the other as the NHIF system detects which of the two categories you fall in.
